Window Well Grates

Choosing a Window Well Grate

A grate sits over the window well to stop people, pets and larger debris from falling in. Unlike a solid cover, it stays open to the air, so rain and small debris can still pass through. Grates suit homeowners who want fall protection and a sturdy, open look.

Three grate styles

• Custom powder-coated grates: made to order, built to fit our hinges, durable, scratch-resistant and weatherproof.
• Mesh grates: ready-made, fit most metal window wells and install quickly.
• Bar grates: also ready-made and easy to install, with strong protection and a classic look.

Mesh and bar grates are the faster route when your wells are a common size. Powder-coated grates are the choice when the well is an unusual shape or you want a specific finish and design.

Grates or covers?

Grates are not maintenance-free. Leaves, snow and dirt can still collect in the well below, so expect to clean it out from time to time. If you want the well kept clean and dry, one of our custom window well covers is the better fit. If you already have grates and want to keep them, an overlay can go over the top to keep debris and wildlife out.

Window Well Grate FAQ

Will a ready-made grate fit my well?

Our mesh and bar grates fit most metal window wells. For composite, concrete or odd-shaped wells, a custom powder-coated grate is usually the right call.

Do grates need upkeep?

Some. Because they are open, debris can fall through, and the well will need occasional cleaning.

How do I measure for a grate?

Measure the width and the projection from the house at the widest part of the well, outside edge to outside edge, then send us the sizes.
